We want to send a message to our readers and supporters about Hurricane Fiona.

Fiona hit Puerto Rico on September 18, 2022. The entire island lost electricity and water. Buildings and roads were damaged. People lost their homes. Many animals, including stray cats and dogs, companion animals, and farm animals drowned. Today, two days after the storm, people are still without power and water. Cellular phone communications are inconsistent.

At Casa Vegana, we are still without electricty. Our team, who we introduced in our previous email, is still without power, water, and/or consistent phone service.

In the days leading up to the event, Puerto Rican residents, and their loved ones on the mainland, were expressing their fear for what would occur. This stress was in part caused by the effects Hurricane Maria had on the island in 2017, feelings of being unprepared, and not knowing how infrastructure would hold up. People felt unsafe, and ultimately, the disaster hit us very hard.

Following the passage of Hurricane Fiona, Casa Vegana recognizes the urgent need the Puerto Rican community has for adequate disaster mitigation and preparation for major weather emergencies. We have in the past provided educational webinars on vegan disaster preparation. We plan to reincorporate this education in our regular online programming.
